How to Install a Glueless Wig in 2 Minutes

I timed it. From taking the wig off the stand to walking out the door: 2 minutes and 10 seconds on my first try with the UNice Bye-Bye Knots. By day three I was doing it in under 90 seconds. Here is the method that works on every glueless wig I have tested.

What you need: Your glueless wig, a wig cap (optional but recommended), edge control or mousse for your baby hairs, a rat-tail comb. That is it. No glue. No gel. No melting spray. No praying.

1

Step 1: Prep Your Natural Hair

Braid your hair into cornrows or flat twists going straight back. If your hair is short, a wig cap alone will do. The goal is to make your head as flat as possible so the wig sits flush. Any bumps underneath will show through the lace. If you have edges you want to leave out for blending, do that now — but most glueless wigs look better with everything tucked in. Spray a little water or mousse on your braids to keep flyaways down.

2

Step 2: Position the Wig

Hold the wig by the ear tabs. Tilt your head slightly forward. Place the front lace edge about half an inch behind your natural hairline — you will adjust this later. Pull the wig back over your head and make sure the ear tabs sit evenly in front of your ears. If one ear tab is higher than the other, the part will sit crooked and it will look like a wig. Adjust the cap so the center part lines up with the center of your nose.

3

Step 3: Secure the Combs and Band

Every glueless wig has two or three combs sewn into the cap — usually one at the front hairline and one on each side. Slide the front comb into your braids at the hairline. Then the side combs. If your wig has an elastic band at the back, adjust it so the cap feels snug. The band plus the combs should already feel secure. If the wig feels loose at this stage, the drawstring will fix it.

4

Step 4: The Drawstring — This Is the Secret

Reach behind your head and find the drawstring at the nape of the wig. Pull it evenly on both sides — not too hard. You want the cap to conform to the shape of your head without squeezing. The wig should feel like a snug headband, not a rubber band around your skull. Tie the drawstring in a small bow and tuck the ends under the cap. The drawstring is what makes a glueless wig actually glueless — it creates a custom fit that combs alone cannot achieve. If you have the invisible strap system (Ashimary and UNice both use it), you can adjust the fit in seconds without even taking the wig off.

5

Step 5: Slide the Front Lace Forward

Now that the wig is secure, use your thumbs to gently slide the front lace forward until it sits exactly on your natural hairline. The lace should lie flat without any glue. If the lace lifts at the edges, the wig is too tight — loosen the drawstring slightly. If the lace bunches up, the wig is too loose — tighten it.

6

Step 6: Lay Your Baby Hairs

Use a small amount of edge control or mousse on a toothbrush or edge brush to shape the baby hairs along your hairline. Do not use gel directly on the lace — it will clog the holes and the lace will look shiny under light. A little mousse on the baby hairs themselves is enough. If the wig has pre-cut lace (UNice and Ashimary both do), you can skip the trimming step entirely.

Two things that make a difference: First, the wig needs to sit slightly behind your natural hairline when you first position it, then slide forward. If you try to place it exactly on the hairline from the start, it will be too far forward once the drawstring tightens. Second, do not overtighten the drawstring. It should feel comfortable enough to wear for 8+ hours. I wore one too tight for a full workday and had a headache by 4pm. You want snug, not tight.
